A slow connection exposes hidden assumptions
A website that feels quick on an office connection may behave differently on a busy train or an older phone. Large images, unnecessary scripts and several competing requests can delay the point at which the page becomes useful.
Test an ordinary journey under constrained conditions. Look at when text appears, whether controls respond and whether the layout moves while someone is trying to read.

Send what the first view actually needs
Images should be sized for the place they occupy, with responsive alternatives where appropriate. Reserve their space so the page does not jump as they arrive.
Defer material that is not needed for the first view, but do not delay the main image simply to improve a superficial metric. The right priority follows the reader's task, not a rule applied to every asset.
Keep the essential task available
Progressive enhancement gives the basic experience a stable foundation. Navigation and article text should remain understandable if a script fails or arrives late.
A form needs clear feedback when a request cannot complete. Measure a representative page after meaningful changes, including advertising and third-party tools. Performance is a property of the finished experience, not just the empty template.
